26-02-2007 - Vietnam can save water using the Neighbour Search
In collaboration with scientists from the Danish Hydraulic Institute (DHI), Gianluca Dorini uses the Neighbour Search (NS) methodology to identify optimal operation policies for the Hoa Binh, the largest reservoir in Vietnam.
Hoa Binh, which is the largest reservoir in Vietnam with a total storage capacity of 9.5 billion m3 and a live storage of 5.6 billion m3, has been operated in the Red river basin since 1990, its two main purposes being flood control and hydropower generation. In order to provide the DHI with optimal operation policies for planning purposes, the Hoa Binh problem was modelled as a Multi-Objective Stochastic Dynamic Program (MOSDP) and then solved using the Neighbour Search (NS). Please read on for the full case study.
The NS, which was developed by Gianluca Dorini in 2006 , is a revolutionary approach to the optimisation of MOSDP that enables the efficient identification of the full set of optimal trade-off solutions.
The NS methodology can be successfully applied to problems that are inherently stochastic, multi-objective and multi-stage including finance and dynamic options, telecommunications and asset management.
